Questions About Traveling Limitations at your Social Security Disability Hearing

  • Published: November 14, 2011

During an Administrative Hearing before an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ), as a claimant, you will need to answer a variety of questions related to your mental or physical condition that is at issue in the hearing. The ALJ or your Ocala disability lawyer will pose questions to you to help the ALJ gain a better understanding of your condition, and the limitations that arise because of the condition.

One line of questioning during the disability hearing may involve your ability to travel. These type of questions are asked to gauge your ability to leave the house and travel to and from a job or while on a job, whether on her own or with some assistance. Your ability to travel is one strong indicator of whether you can hold down a job.

For example, the ALJ may ask you how you got to the hearing. In addition, you should be prepared to answer questions about how often you are able to leave your house and whether you can travel alone, or need assistance from another individual. If you have a physical condition that may cause emotional distress like anxiety or depression, the ALJ may ask you whether you experience any symptoms while leaving the house.

The ALJ presiding over the disability hearing will ask you whether you have a driver’s license. If you do not have a driver’s license, the ALJ may inquire as to why you don’t, and if you have ever had one. If you have a driver’s license, you may answer questions about whether you have a handicapped parking permit, and if you have any restrictions on your driver’s license.

Finally, the ALJ or your Ocala disability lawyer may question you regarding whether you have good or bad days and what such days are like. This is a good opportunity for you to describe what a typical day is like and how your condition affects your ability to accomplish everyday tasks.

If you have difficulty traveling to and from a job or suffer from any other physical or mental problem that prevents you from working, contact experienced Ocala Social Security attorney CJ Henry today for an evaluation of your disability claim.  The initial consultation is free.
