Work and Educational History

  • Published: July 6, 2011

When you will be asked to testify about your educational and work history at your Social Security disability hearing, the judge will want to know about the job duties in your past employment, the job skills that you have, and the educational credentials that you have attained, if any.

In terms of past work, you will be asked about the duties for which you were responsible at each position that you have held in the past 15 years. You will be questioned as to how much weight you were required to lift on the job and how much time per workday you had to sit, stand, and walk. Any difficulties that you have had at your former jobs due to health reasons are also relevant, as are your reasons for leaving each job, especially the last one that you held. If you are struggling to explain why you cannot perform the duties of one of the jobs that you have done in the past 15 years, you should ask your Ocala disability lawyer for help.

Job skills are what are needed to perform all of the duties of a job. An accurate description of your skills is especially important if you have had skilled or semi-skilled work. Prepare to estimate how long it would take a person to learn to do any of your past jobs. It will not help you to downplay or exaggerate the duties that you have had; stating the facts in a straightforward fashion is the best way to approach this as well as any other aspects of your testimony.

Testifying about your educational history means relating and explaining any of the following that apply to you:

  • The highest grade that you completed while in school;
  • Information on military training received;
  • Formal vocational training; and
  • On-the-job training.

If you have recently received any kind of education or training, make sure that your Ocala disability attorney knows before the hearing.

Because there are so many elements that affect the outcome, preparing for a hearing can be difficult. For a free case evaluation with Ocala disability lawyer CJ Henry, call (352) 304-5300.
